Master Production Scheduler

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders and Everett Ship Repair are building and servicing state-of-the-art vessels including tugs, ferries, fishing vessels, barges, and cruise boats in the Pacific Northwest.  Operating in Freeland and Everett Washington respective, they work independently and jointly on projects, bringing the skills, trades and resources required to support the maritime community of the Pacific Northwest.

The Master Production Scheduler manages the planning process to create integrated project schedules. The role is responsible for planning, scheduling, and tracking of work items; including work definition, progression, change order scoping and resource loading with Microsoft Project and Sage X3 and is responsible for advising project teams and management on the status of in-progress work, material availability, and any potential production issues or challenges. These activities are to be coordinated across both NBBB and ESR, all departments, project teams, and facilities.


  • Drives efficient performance in all company projects through skillful creation and management of forward-looking project schedules using full functionality of Microsoft Project scheduling software to develop all detailed activities, logical relationships, durations, and resource loading.
  • Uses planning skills to refine the project strategy into a project plan consisting of key events, major milestones, and durations of top-level activities necessary to execution.
  • Collaborates with Project Manager and Project Engineer to create Work Breakdown Structure for projects and ensure builds are executed as planned.
  • Work with project teams (PMs, PEs, and Production) to plan, prepare, issue, and control production schedules and all associated activities.
  • Supports output of Project Management Review Plans from within MS Project and supports Integrated Baseline Reviews.
  • Generates resource loaded program schedule in Microsoft Project or other similar software as required.
  • Analyzes workload and provide man-loading demand by craft for each project and yard.
  • Reviews contract specifications, schedule reporting requirements, milestone targets and regulatory requirements to assign responsibilities in schedules for meeting stakeholder expectations.
  • Conducts detailed schedule analysis, variance analysis, root cause analysis, critical path analysis, schedule rise analysis and “what if” analysis.
  • Collects and assesses the validity of progress data. Updates the schedule with progress and consults with the project management and production teams whenever updates present new or ongoing execution risks.
  • Supports Earned Value Management and other project controls deliverables of on-going projects within MS Project.
  • Incorporates and maintains baseline and earned value management (EVM) data within project schedule files as required.
  • Adheres to scheduling/resource planning processes, work breakdown structure (WBS) standards.
  • Participates in Change Order management, including impact analysis, and budget adjustments and maintenance within MS Project.
  • Plans and schedules workflow for each department and operation according to previously established manufacturing sequences and lead times. Plans sequence of fabrication, assembly, installation, and other manufacturing operations for guidance of production workers.
  • Assists with the development of schedules for proposals, and support estimating efforts with scheduling information as needed and assigned.
  • Maintains data through appropriate file handling, safeguarding and archiving data as required by policies and procedures established.
  • Provides work instruction and technical coaching to others involved in managing the schedule and the project progress.
  • Communicates status milestones and issues to project management teams relative to time, budget, and demonstrated results
  • Engages with project managers to provide quality control of the schedule and coordinate the conjunctive or dependent activities.
  • Assists with development of software to integrate various platforms into model that provides timely, accurate and comprehensive enterprise-wide information to support project activities and drive profitable performance.


Mandatory Requirements:

  • Bachelor Science and 5-10 years working as a Senior Scheduler/Planner in a projects-based construction or manufacturing environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Project (5+ years), including full resource/cost loading and full MS Project Earned Value capabilities.
  • Analytical abilities necessary to develop and maintain integrated schedules and supporting data.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented self-starter.
  • Versatility to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively and respond well to last minute, high priority, and time sensitive projects.
  • Ability to function independently with minimum supervision while simultaneously influencing and providing process and technical direction to key operations stakeholders who must provide timely and accurate project status information.
  • Experience with work orders, and critical path method scheduling.
  • Expert level of knowledge / proficiency with Microsoft Project, Excel, and other related schedule/risk assessment applications.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations/environment of limited standardization.
  • Ability to be flexible and able to “shift gears” in the face of interrupted schedules and unfulfilled promises.


Preferred Requirements

  • Project Management Institute Certification (Scheduling or Project Management Professional)
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems and network scheduling software
  • Experience in a complex multi-product, build-to-order production environment creating project and master schedules and resource plans preferably in ship building or ship service.
  • Experience in executing effective IT integration practices relative to time management, and scheduling functions to include Sage X3, Attendance Enterprise, MS Project, and HRIS systems such as Paycom
